Top Ten picture books
My top ten picture books.
Showing veeerrry clearly that I grew up in the UK in the 70s and 80s! I do like newer stuff, honest, but these ones remind me of sitting in front of the fire trying to spot new details on each open. Reading books meant I could avoid having to play outside!
Number 10 The Ladybird Cinderella, Eric Winter (The blue dress was the best one)
Number 9 Would You Rather, John Burningham
Number 8 Mog at Christmas, Judith Kerr
Number 7 The Old Joke Book Janet and Allan Ahlberg (I didn’t understand most of the jokes but this is evergreen: Q Why did the bees go on strike? A They wanted shorter flowers and more honey!)
Number 6 The Trouble With Jack, Shirley Hughes (the party table and the rosy dress and the pushchair in a pond)
Number 5 The Enormous Crocodile, Quentin Blake, (the roundabout disguise)
Number 4 3 and 2 (joint winners) Winter Story, Jill Barklem, Curious Creatures, Helen Oxenbury, The Church Cat Abroad, Graham Oakley
Number 2 Burglar Bill, Janet and Allan Ahlberg
Number 1 Father Christmas, Raymond Briggs.
Showing my Helen Oxenbury and Church Cat books because these are the only originaI copies I have. The rest I have to have had to re-buy.
